Children with various types of disabilities such as mental retardation deafness or other hearing impairment speech or language impairment blindness orthopaedic impairment autism traumatic brain injury poor body etc., But usually it is seen that they have limited opportunities. So, it becomes the duty of all school to provide them with such opportunities so that they develop their abilities. Special education or related services are required. Such children are unable to undertake activities that are performed by normal children. In the first half of the yestercentury different names were suggested for special physical education for differently abled children. Some of the common names were Corrective Physical Education Remedial Physical Education Physical Therapy Corrective Therapy Development Physical Education and Individual Physical Education.
Now adapted or adaptive physical education is a subdiscipline of physical education. In 1947 American Association for health Physical Education and Recreation conducted a survey to determine the most acceptable term for the identification of physical education for differently abled children. it is an individualised programme development for students who require a specially designed programme of physical education. Consequently the term was the most acceptable. The progamme of adapted or adaptive physical education involves physical fitness motor fitness fundamental motor skills and patterns aquatic skills dance skills individual and group games and sports. Consequently the term was the most acceptable. Since then this term became popular.

Meaning of Adapted or Adaptive Physical Education
It can be defined as a diversified programme of developmental activities games sports and rhythms suited to the interests capacities and limitations of student with disabilities who may not safely or successfully engage in unrestricted participation in the general physical education programme. Adapted physical education provides safe personally satisfying and successful experiences of physical activity to children who are differently abled. it is a direct service not a related services. It can be applied for infants and even toddlers who need early intervention services because of developmental delays in physical cognitive communication social and emotional aspects. Adapted physical education is not only for differently abled infants and students but also for the people of all ages.
Adaptive physical education is the physical education which has been adaptive or changed so that it may be appropriate for the differently abled person as it is for a person without disability. In simple words it can be stated that adapted physical education is basically a specially designed physical education programme for differently abled student.
